Deakin Shared Laboratory Upgrades

The Brief

The existing ecological and forensic science research facilities at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus were upgraded to meet the needs of the university’s evolving research department. These spaces included five specialised laboratories and facilities for the receiving of hazardous material. The facility was required to meet all OH&S requirements expected in a facility handling hazardous material including the external receival and internal dispensing of the material to the associated departments.

Project Description

Select Architects assessed various risks relating to the handling of hazardous material, bio security and the OH&S requirements, minimising identified risks through appropriate design and material response. Close co-ordination was undertaken with services engineers for the alteration of existing services for the new purpose.
Materials and design were assessed against the operational requirements associated with the use of the facility including simplified cleaning and the inclusion of specialised equipment, fixtures and fittings. The project was constructed safely, meeting the user’s needs, and adhering to Deakin University’s strict design standards.
Deakin University were elated at the proficiency and professionalism exhibited by Select in delivering the functional, specialised laboratory spaces safely and efficiently.
