RURAL RETREAT –

THE BRIEF:

The farmland had been in the client’s family for more than 100 years. The site, nestled on the gentle bend of the Merri River, required a careful and sensitive design while taking advantage of the magnificent and serene rural views.

OUR APPROACH:

Our principal architect, Peter Serra, is the client’s brother and grew up along the river. He not only identified with the river frontage but also the subtle nuances of the area. The simple pavilion inspiration of the design came from the local dairy industry and also provided the ability to close down the separate pavilions as required. The internal courtyards created a hierarchy of outdoor spaces that also provided protection from the southwest winds.

RESULTS:

The clients frequently entertain family and guests from around the globe. The home provides multiple spaces for entertaining and captures the rural views, while being respectful of the landscape.
