Select Architects were engaged to assist Downer upgrade their Newport facilities to support a new workforce employed to deliver the largest order of new trains in Victoria’s history – The ‘High Capacity Metro Train’ project.
Engaged for full services of the upgrade, this included the repurposing of existing buildings to include the following:
• Conversion of a large warehouse into modern offices, workshops and training
facilities;
• New amenities including a staff kitchen and dining areas, toilets and car parking;
• Design and construction of a new unloading facility for oversized train carcasses; Extensive surveying and investigation was required to understand the existing conditions – including services locations, structural design, NCC non-compliance and DDA non-compliance. A high level of coordination was required within the consultant team to ensure the refurbishment met the client’s needs, was compliant, on time and on budget.
